Town Mourns (updated)
A Monday morning head-on collision at 7:50 a.m. on Highway 13 south of Bear Creek at the Flat Creek Bridge claimed the lives of Billy Dixon, 62, and his grandson Wesley Evans, age 1. Bill's wife, Pam Dixon, 62, and the driver of the other vehicle, Phillip David Cagle, 53, were both transported to Russellville Hospital and then transfered to the Huntsville Hospital Trauma Center. Officials at Huntsville Hospital on Monday said both were listed in fair condition.

According to initial witness and police reports, the 2002 Mitsubishi Gallant driven by Cagle veered over the highway center line and collided head-on with the 1998 Jeep Cherokee driven by Dixon. The Dixon Cherokee was north bound and had just crossed over the Flat Creek Bridge when the collision with the south bound Mitsubishi occurred.

Bear Creek police Chief Ed Franks reports, that the Dixons "had just come off the bridge, maybe 75-100 feet, but were still within the spans of the guardrails, when the collision happened."

He said the impact slammed the jeep over the guardrails and into a ditch.

Franks said Bill Dixon and his grandson were pronounced dead at the scene by members of the Marion County Coroner's office.

Both Mr. & Mrs. Dixon were retired from the Phillips schools. Mr. Dixon was the Phillips Elementary Principal and Mrs. Dixon was an English teacher at Phillips High. Their daughter, Heather Evans, mother to Wesley, is a teacher at nearby Haleyville High School.

The wreck is still under investigation by Bear Creek Police and state troopers from the Hamilton State Troopers Post.
